Background of the Study

Extracurricular sports activities play a pivotal role in the development of social skills among undergraduates, offering opportunities for teamwork, leadership, and interpersonal communication. In Zaria, where higher education institutions are recognized for their vibrant student communities, sports serve as a bridge between academic life and social development (Abdullahi, 2023). Universities in Zaria have increasingly incorporated sports clubs and intercollegiate competitions into their extracurricular calendars to complement academic pursuits. These activities not only promote physical fitness but also provide an arena for students to engage in collaborative problem-solving and conflict resolution. The integration of sports into the university culture has been linked to improved self-esteem and enhanced communication skills among students (Mustapha, 2024). Moreover, extracurricular sports foster a sense of belonging and community spirit, which is particularly beneficial in a diverse academic environment. The informal interactions that occur during sports events allow students to develop critical social skills, such as teamwork, empathy, and leadership, which are essential for both personal and professional success (Sani, 2025). However, despite these benefits, there remains a gap in systematic research on how extracurricular sports activities directly impact the social skills development of undergraduates in Zaria. Factors such as resource availability, institutional support, and cultural attitudes towards sports play crucial roles in determining the extent of these benefits. Furthermore, challenges such as scheduling conflicts, academic pressures, and varying levels of student interest can influence the degree of participation and the overall impact on social skill development. This study aims to investigate these factors comprehensively by examining the interplay between extracurricular sports participation and the development of social competencies. By doing so, it will provide valuable insights into how universities can better structure their sports programs to maximize social outcomes. In addition, the research will explore the role of faculty advisors and student-led initiatives in promoting a culture of active participation and mutual support. The findings are expected to contribute to a more nuanced understanding of the social dynamics within higher education institutions and offer recommendations for enhancing the role of sports in student development (Ibrahim, 2023). Ultimately, this study will bridge the gap between theory and practice, demonstrating the significant potential of extracurricular sports as a tool for social development among undergraduates.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the recognized importance of extracurricular sports activities in fostering social skills among undergraduates, there are persistent challenges in fully realizing these benefits in Zaria. Many institutions struggle with low participation rates, primarily due to academic pressures and a lack of structured programs that emphasize the social aspects of sports. This problem is compounded by limited funding, inadequate facilities, and insufficient institutional support, which often result in poorly organized activities that fail to engage students effectively (Babatunde, 2023). Furthermore, there is a noticeable gap in the literature regarding the direct impact of sports on the development of social skills, with most studies focusing predominantly on academic or physical benefits rather than interpersonal competencies. Faculty and administrators have noted that while sports activities are popular, their potential to enhance critical social skills such as teamwork, leadership, and communication remains underutilized. Some students report that the competitive nature of sports sometimes overshadows opportunities for meaningful social interaction, leading to fragmented social groups rather than a cohesive community (Chinedu, 2024). Additionally, cultural and societal attitudes towards sports in Zaria can influence student involvement, with some viewing extracurricular participation as a distraction from academic success. These issues highlight the need for a systematic investigation into how extracurricular sports can be optimized to support social skill development among undergraduates. The problem is not merely one of participation but also of ensuring that the activities are structured in a way that maximizes interpersonal learning and collaborative engagement. Without addressing these challenges, the full potential of sports as a developmental tool remains unfulfilled. Therefore, this study seeks to explore the factors that limit effective social skills development through sports and to identify strategies that can help bridge this gap, thereby enhancing both individual and collective student outcomes (Ifeoma, 2025).

Objectives of the Study

1. To evaluate the impact of extracurricular sports activities on the social skills development of undergraduates.

2. To identify the factors that hinder or facilitate effective social interaction during sports activities.

3. To propose recommendations for optimizing extracurricular sports programs to enhance social skills development.

Research Questions

1. How do extracurricular sports activities influence the development of social skills among undergraduates in Zaria?

2. What are the main challenges faced by students in utilizing sports for social skill development?

3. How can universities restructure extracurricular sports activities to better promote interpersonal competencies?

Research Hypotheses

1. H₁: Participation in extracurricular sports activities significantly improves the social skills of undergraduates.

2. H₂: Limited institutional support negatively affects the potential of sports activities to enhance social skills development.

3. H₃: Structured sports programs with integrated social skill components lead to better interpersonal outcomes among students.

Significance of the Study

This study is significant as it explores the nexus between extracurricular sports activities and social skills development among undergraduates in Zaria. Its findings will provide empirical evidence to support the restructuring of sports programs in universities, enhancing student engagement and interpersonal development. The insights generated will benefit educators, policy-makers, and student leaders by offering strategies to integrate social learning more effectively into extracurricular activities (Okoro, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study is confined to examining the effects of extracurricular sports activities on the social skills development of undergraduates in Zaria Local Government Area. It is limited to the analysis of program structure, participation levels, and perceived social outcomes, without considering external influences beyond the academic environment.
